Mr Sweney (Honey making)

Mr Sweney came to tell us about how bees
make honey and what it tastes like
fresh. He showed us some dead bees also and
we got to hold them. In this photo  Mr Sweney  is
standing by the honey extractor. He used an electrically
heated knife to take the wax cappings off.He let us
all turn the handle of the extractor. The honey
spins out, hits the side and flows down to the
bottom. The honey tasted pretty good.

Matariki Newspapers

On the 2nd of June it was Matariki. Room 5 were given some newspapers on Matariki to read and fill in the challenging questions. Room 5 students worked together with the buddy that  they sit next to, like these two students Holly and Josh. Matariki is the New Maori Year, when seven stars can be seen in the sky. There are several Maori legends about the seven stars of Matariki. The Greek call Matariki the Pleiades. The Japanese call it the Subaru. Arcording to the Maori there are two meanings for Matariki, tiny eyes (mata riki) or eyes of God (mata ariki.) -Reporters Roshni and Briar.

Room5 Music.

Room5 has been doing music. The songs we sang were, Better than War and Mauria Mai Taku Wai. Mrs Sweney plays the guitar and the children sing. One of the songs is about wisdom being better than weapons of war. We also sang Pu Kupu Maori. We sing in Room 6.

Sam drawing a hexagon with a compass

We are learning about bees.We learnt that a hexagon is used because it can hold more honey. Also hexagons are tessellated ...that means they fit together with out any gaps. Some people found it hard.
